Proverbs 3:13-20 - Happiness in Wisdom

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.Proverbs 3:13

Why?

For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.Proverbs 3:14

In Proverbs 2:4 we are reminded to seek for wisdom and search for understanding as for hid treasures. In Proverbs 8:10 we are counseled to “receive my [wisdom’s] instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold”.. for “my fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.” Proverbs 8:19. - And in Psalms 19:10, David reminds us concerning the fear of the Lord, the law of the Lord, His wisdom, that “more to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

She [wisdom] is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.Proverbs 3:15

Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.Proverbs 3:16-17

He [the King] asked life of thee [God], and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.Psalms 21:4

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.Psalms 16:11

Riches and honour are with me [wisdom]; yea, durable riches and righteousness.Proverbs 8:18

Both riches and honour come of thee [the Father], and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.1 Chronicles 29:12

The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into His hand.John 3:35

…Worthy is the Lamb [Christ, the Son of God] that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.Revelation 5:12

What is the “wisdom of God” ? Wisdom is here and throughout most of Proverbs described as a “she”. While fitting, comparing scripture with scripture, line upon line and precept upon precept, we find that there is a deeper meaning to be found as well. Consider the following verses:

But of Him [the Father] are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:1 Corinthians 1:30

But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.1 Corinthians 1:24

Here, and in many other places both in Proverbs and throughout the rest of the Scriptures, we find stronger and stronger evidence to show that Christ is the wisdom of God and, in light of this, we come to realize that the happiness promised us with the possession of wisdom in Proverbs 3:13 is the happiness that is promised us with Christ in our hearts.

Let’s look at the rest of this morning’s verses:

She [wisdom] is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.Proverbs 3:18

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.John 17:3

Now let’s look at the last two verses:

The Lord (our Father) by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath He established the heavens. By His knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.Proverbs 3:19-20

Compare this with the following verses:

For by Him [Christ] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him:Colossians 2:16

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him [Christ, the Word]; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.John 1:1-4

True happiness comes to us as a fruit of wisdom and understanding. As we’ve touched briefly on these verses this morning, we’ve also seen the beginning of clues that point us to Christ as the wisdom of God and thus to Christ as the source of all true happiness.

Call To Action: Cry out to God for wisdom (Proverbs 2:3) and then search for it in God’s Word as for a hidden treasure until you find it, and with it, true happiness. And then, once you’ve found it, rejoice and share your newfound treasure with others.
