When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things.Proverbs 2:10-12
The wisdom here mentioned, as we’ve seen in previous verses the past few mornings, is the wisdom of God, the wisdom from above:
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.James 3:17
And a result of such wisdom in our hearts is that discretion will preserve us and understanding will keep us. From what?
To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; Whose ways are crooked and they froward in their paths.Proverbs 2:12-15
The steps outlined in Proverbs 2:1-5 are the beginning of a much deeper Christian experience. As the wisdom from above, promised by God (James 1:5), enters into our hearts, our lives begin to be transformed. We become pure in heart (Matthew 5:8), peacemakers (Matthew 5:9), gentle, easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without any partiality and without hypocrisy.
And as this change takes place, discretion will keep us. We will be delivered from the ways of the evil, from those that speak froward (perverse) things. Instead of walking in darkness as the wicked, we will have God’s word which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalms 119:105). Instead of the crooked path that leads to destruction, we will walk the straight and narrow that leads to everlasting life. (Matthew 7:13-14)
Call To Action: Read Proverbs 2:1-5 again and then ask God for wisdom and understanding. Ask it in faith, believing that what He has promised (James 1:5) He will do. (Matthew 7:7) Ask for wisdom and understanding today so that discretion will preserve you and understanding will keep you and as they do so, ask for these things that you may be a blessing to others.
