Proverbs 2:9 - Understanding Righteousness

Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.Proverbs 2:9

Looking back at Proverbs 2:1-5, we recall the three “if” statements followed by the first “then” in verse 5. If we take up a reading of God’s Word, if we cry out for knowledge and lift our voices for understanding, and if we then, in faith, seek for it as for hidden treasure, then, we are assured that we will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

Here in verse 9, we are give another “then” statement. We see that as a result of following the 3 “ifs” in verses 1-4, we will also understand righteousness and judgment and equity, yea, every good path.

In light of the first “if”, receiving God’s word, let’s see what else the bible has to say on the subject:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto every good work.2 Timothy 3:16-17

Here we not only affirm that the Proverbs are inspired by God Himself but that, just as we find in Proverbs 2:9, they are profitable for “instruction in righteousness”.

Near the end of Proverbs 2:9 we find that we’ll also understand “every good path.” And, in 2 Timothy 3:17 we found that all scripture was given by inspiration of God, that the man of God may be perfect. Elsewhere in Proverbs we find the following counsel:

Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her, for she is thy life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.Proverbs 4:13-18

In Proverbs 2:9, in the light of the previous verses 1-4, we find encouragement that if we follow the outline God has given us, we will understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity, and every good path. For God’s word is a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path.(Psalms 119:105)

As you take up a reading of God’s Word each morning, not only here in Proverbs but all throughout the Scriptures, pray for knowledge and understanding and then search for it diligently, as if you were searching for a hidden treasure that you knew, beyond all doubt, was there below the surface. Then, you will understand what it means to fear God, you will find a knowledge of him, and, as we learned today, you will understand righteousness.
