Proverbs 2:16-22 - The Upright and Perfect

For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.Proverbs 2:21-22

Before finishing this second chapter of Proverbs this morning, we need to look a few verses back. Read again Proverbs 2:10-12. Here we’re reminded that when wisdom enters into our hearts and knowledge is pleasant to us, then discretion will preserve us and understanding will keep us.. from what?

To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward (perverse) things.Proverbs 2:12

And today, in verse 16, we find an additional thing that discretion can deliver us from:

To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words. Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. None that go into her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.Proverbs 2:16-19

This concept of a “strange woman” is dealt more thoroughly on in Proverbs 4. To finish our thoughts in Chapter 2 this morning, let’s go back and look at verses 10-12 again.

When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant to thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things.Proverbs 2:10-12

This man is described more thoroughly in the proceeding verses, followed by the strange woman in verses 16-19, and then, the thought is finished:

That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.Proverbs 2:20

So we see that when wisdom enters into our hearts and the knowledge of God is pleasant to us, then discretion shall preserve us and understanding shall keep us.. from what? The evil man and the strange woman.. why? That we might walk in the way of good men and keep the paths of the righteous.

For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.Proverbs 2:21-22

Call To Action: Cry out to God today for wisdom and understanding. As we follow the steps outlined in Proverbs 2:1-5, wisdom will enter into our hearts. As it does so, discretion will preserve us. Our judgment will be sound, and our understanding will keep us and deliver us from the ways of the evil. Then, let us walk, by God’s grace, the way of the good and keep the path of the righteous that shines brighter and brighter unto a perfect day.(Proverbs 4:18) For the upright, the righteous, shall dwell in the Promised Land, the Earth made new (Isaiah 65:17, 2 Peter 3:13), and they shall remain in it throughout the ages of eternity.
