Proverbs 1:20-33 - Safety in Wisdom

Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn ye at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.Proverbs 1:20-23

Here wisdom is crying out after us and inviting us to turn at her reproof. This is followed by a promise to pour out the Holy Spirit upon us. Let’s keep reading:

Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.Proverbs 1:24-27

By their own choice, those who disregarded wisdom refused the call and the outstretched hand (verse 24). They set at nought the counsels and ignored the reproofs. As a result, their fears and destruction will come upon them. And, the Bible continues:

Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer: they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: for they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.Proverbs 1:28-30.

Why is it too late? See Verse 29

Because they hated knowledge (the knowledge of God) and did not choose the fear of the Lord. They disregarded His counsels and despised His reproofs.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.Proverbs 1:31-32

Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.Job 4:8

But, after all this, God’s love and mercy shine brightly through for we are left with a verse of hope:

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.Proverbs 1:33

Summary:Here in God’s word, as we prayerfully take it up each day and study out its precious truths, we will grow in grace and in the knowledge of God. We will find counsels and reproofs and as we take heed to each one, we are assured that we will dwell in safety, in the secret place of the Most High and under the shadow of the Almighty. (See Psalms 91)

Verse 28 mentions those that, too late, call and seak for wisdom early, but hear no answer and find no truths. But, while we yet read these words, whomever we may be, there is still hope. Why? Because the Lord’s hand is not shortened that He cannot save, neither His ear heavy that He cannot hear our prayers. Isaiah 59:1 But, we must remember that the condition to hearing our prayers is that we don’t regard iniquity in our hearts Psalms 66:18.

Call To Action: So, while there is still hope, let us seek the Lord early each day through prayer and the study of HIs word. Let us call out for help to Him who alone knows our tears and our sorrows and who alone can give us the peace that passeth all understanding.
