John 17:7-10 - We May Choose to Follow God

Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou has given me are of thee…. I pray not for the world, but for them which thou has given me; for they are thine. John 17:7, 9.

All things that Jesus received he lived by showing that they were from His father. As Jesus’ time on earth was closing, those that chose to follow Him were led upward in thought to their heavenly Father. God wishes to bless us with many things that we may impart to others. All that the Lord speaks concerning us will come to pass. Joshua 23:14.

For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. John 17:8.

The words which Jesus spoke to us on earth were heavenly words. As He spent time in communion with His Father, He was given these words. So may we be like Jesus. We can live on this earth and daily receive words from our heavenly Father.

I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou has given me; for they are thine. John 17:9.

We are predestinated according to the Father’s will (Ephesians 1:11 speaking of our Heavenly Father); and of all that the Father gave to the Son, nothing was lost (John 6:39-40). All that the Father gave to Jesus were those that “believeth on him”. Therefore it is the Father’s will that none should perish, but that all should have eternal life (John 3:16). It is our choice whether to believe on Him. Joshua 24:15. Extra verses to consider: John 3:35, John 13:3.

Jesus prayed for those that chose to believe on Him. He prayed for those that were given to Him. With what perseverance did he pray for us! It is His joy for every sinner to turn from repentance and follow Him.

And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. John 17:10.

The Father is glorified when we bear much fruit (John 15:8). God is glorifed when Jesus ministers unto us (Isaiah 61:1-3, see Luke 4:18-19). It is His desire that we bear much fruit.
