Start your day with the treasures of the Bible
I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; when I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.2 Timothy 1:3-5
There is much to dwell on within these few verses. Paul found in Timothy, though still a youth, an able and faithful companion in the gospel of Christ. Timothy, by trusting in God’s strength and not his own, exercised a faith set on a firm foundation that no trial or tribulation could overcome. As both young and old, we can find encouragement and strength in Paul’s inspired instructions to Timothy.
This morning, we’re going to dwell on faith. May God’s Holy Spirit guide us into all truth.
What is faith? See Hebrews 11:1
Faith is, in the Apostle’s own words, “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is believing that what God says, He will do. It is the substance, the assurance, that the things we hope for, the promises of God, are unbreakable. Faith is the evidence that proves to us, beyond all doubt, that there is a God in heaven who loves us, that there is a better land. By faith we can see that better land afar and by faith we can hear God lovingly and tenderly calling us to come home.
How do we get faith? See Romans 10:17
Faith comes to us by hearing the Word of God. The Scriptures have been given to us as an agency for the transformation of our characters into the perfect character of Christ. Christ pronounced a blessing to those who “hear the Word of God, and keep it.” Luke 11:28. As we search the Scriptures daily for hidden treasure and as we apply the things we’ve learned to our own lives, a change begins to take place. As we reach out by faith, regardless of our feelings, God takes hold of us and lifts us up from captivity to sin and, so long as we maintain our hold on Him, we can know that He will never let us go. This knowledge and the evidence that we see in our lives each and every day, strengthens our faith and strengthens our hold on Divinity.
..Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.Isaiah 27:5
By faith, believing that what God says He will do, we may reach up to the outstretched arm of Infinity and find strength in Him to endure the trials that threaten to overwhelm us. And so long as we maintain our hold, calling out to Him in our weakness, He will give us His peace that passes all understanding and we will have a calm within our hearts, no matter the storms that rage around us.
Call To Action: Let us exercise an unfeigned faith today and ever onward. Regardless of what we feel, let us each reach out by faith and take hold of God’s already outstretched hand. His promises are sure and His love for us goes beyond the deepest depths of our finite understanding. Search the Scriptures daily, mark God’s promises as you find them and, in a simple and childlike faith, trusting God with all your heart, ask for God to fulfill His promises in you, knowing that when you ask according to His will, you will receive and that when you seek, you will find, and when you knock on heaven’s door, it will be opened unto you.
